Founded in 1941, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) is an international association representing the interests of professionals in surveying, mapping and communicating spatial data relating to the Earth's surface. Today, ACSM's members include more than 7,000 surveyors, ...
(1) A polygon lying entirely in one plane. (2) A portion of a plane bounded by straight lines. This definition and the preceding one are approximately equivalent. (3) The geometric figure formed by choosing a sequence of points P 1, P 2,...P N on a plane, joining each point with the next in sequence by a straight line having the two points as end points, and joining the last point, P N, to the first point, P 1, by a similar straight line. (4) A planar figure consisting of N straight lines and N points such that each line is included between just two points and each point lies on just two lines. Definitions (3) and (4) are equivalent for all practical purposes. The figure defined either way is also called a simple polygon. Each line (called a side) is a segment terminating at the two points (called vertices) on which it lies. A simple polygon divides the plane into two parts a part (called the interior) internal to the polygon and a part (called the exterior) external to the polygon. The two parts are distinguished by the characteristic that any line through an internal point either coincides with a side of the polygon or intersects the polygon in exactly two points. If the polygon is a convex polygon, lines can be drawn through points in the exterior without intersecting the polygon. If the polygon is not convex, there is at least one point in the exterior through which lines can be drawn not intersecting the polygon. All points which can be connected to this point by segments not intersecting the polygon then constitute the exterior of the polygon. Angles measured in the interior, between sides, are called internal angles or interior angles; angles measured in the exterior, between sides, are called external angles or exterior angles. The sum of all internal angles is π(N-2).
