A pair of formulas for the root-mean-square error or probable error of a single measurement and the root mean square error or probable error of the average. They are r.m.s. of single measurement = 1.25 Σ δ <sub>x</sub> / √ (n(n-1)) and r.m.s. average = 1.25 Σ δ <sub>x</sub> / (n √(n-1)); the factor 1.25 is replace by 0.8453 if the probable error is wanted. δ <sub>x</sub> is the absolute value of a deviation and n is the number of deviations.
