The process of photographically transferring an image to the surface of a metallic plate or other material and selectively etching the material so that the printing surface is in relief. The term is sometimes used, erroneously, for photogravure, which is a process resulting in a plate printing from the portion not in relief.

(1) A structure, usually of greater length than width, built of timber, stone, concrete or other material, having a platform, and projecting from the shore into navigable waters so that vessels can be moored alongside for loading and unloading cargo, or for storage of cargo during the transfer. (2) A vertical support for the adjacent ends of two spans of a bridge. (3) A wharf consisting of a superstructure of timber, steel or concrete supported by a series of pile bents.

(1) A plane perpendicular to the optical axis of an optical system and passing through a focal point on that axis. (2) That plane, perpendicular to the optical axis of a lens system, onto which the images of points in object space are projected. (3) The locus of all points in image space which are the images of points on a plane in object-space. The focal plane is a plane only for ideal imaging systems. Most optical systems project points on a plane in object space onto a more or less curved surface, the focal surface. (4) The plane of best average definition. The plane so defined need not pass through a focal point but could be merely the plane onto which the image is projected. For this reason, a focal plane through a focal point is sometimes called a principal focal plane. However, that term is preferably used for a plane through the second focal point.

An orbital perturbation increasing monotonically with time. It is in contrast to a periodic perturbation, which increases and decreases with time. A periodic perturbation of very long period may be indistinguishable from a secular perturbation.
