The secular motion of parts of the Earth's crust with respect to other parts or with respect to the mantle. Crustal motion should be clearly distinguished for motion within the crust, which is motion originating above the base of the crust. Crustal motion is not relevant to the stability of bench marks. Motion within the crust is relevant and must be minimized.

A densitometer measuring the density in a very small region of a photograph or similar object. Microdensitometers usually focus the light from a lamp into a very small, fixed spot on the stage holding the object; the transmitted light is picked up by a microscope and sent to a detector. The stage is shifted under the microscope so that eventually the entire region of interest has been investigated. Some microdensitometers, however, use a rapidly moving, very small spot of light to scan the object.
