A Hayford template having the spacings of circles and radii so proportioned (with respect to azimuth and scale of the accompanying map) that elevations and depths within each compartment formed by adjacent arcs and radii can be averaged easily and the effect of the mass therein upon a plumb line at the station (center of the circles) be, under various hypotheses, calculated. The template was devised by J.F. Hayford for use in connection with studies of the figure of the Earth and isostasy, and has been used since by many geophysicists for the same purpose.
