A sphere on which the locations and brightness of stars and other celestial bodies are shown by symbols. The outlines or boundaries of constellations usually are shown also. The celestial globe commonly has a blue background on which stars are indicated by black or white dots whose sizes are proportional to the stellar magnitudes. Great circles on the globe indicate meridians of right ascension; small circles parallel to the equatorial circle indicate parallels of declination.

A map projection defined, for mapping the sphere onto the plane, by the equations x = ( ½ √2) κ R λ and y = (1 + ½ √2) κ R tan(φ/2) in which x and y are the rectangular Cartesian coordinates of that point, in the plane, whose coordinates on the sphere are λ (longitude) and φ (latitude). R is the radius of the sphere and κ is the scale factor. Sometimes referred to simply as Gall's map projection. This is a modified stereographic map projection and is not conformal. Scale is exact along the lines representing parallels of 45<sup>o</sup> N and 45<sup>o</sup> S latitude.
