Founded in 1941, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) is an international association representing the interests of professionals in surveying, mapping and communicating spatial data relating to the Earth's surface. Today, ACSM's members include more than 7,000 surveyors, ...
That part of geodesy which deals with problems on a sphere used as a reference surface. Alternatively, geodesy which assumes that a sphere is adequate as a reference surface.
Industry:Earth science
Local and global motion of the Earth or sea, the measurement of such motion, and its effect on and isolation from the functioning of precise instruments and devices using gyroscopes or other such inertia-dependent devices. The word seems to be part of the jargon of the instrument-making industries and not much used outside of that group.
Industry:Earth science
An alphanumeric coordinate system adopted by the U.S. Air Force for designating the locations of points on the Earth's surface. The name is derived from The World Geographic Reference System.
Industry:Earth science
A compact surveying instrument for measuring horizontal angles and bearings, consisting of a vertical cylinder divided horizontally into two parts: the lower edge of the upper part is graduated in circular measure and revolves on the lower part, which carries a vernier on its upper edge. A magnetic needle is centered in the upper part, which is also provided with slits or a telescope for sighting. The goniasmometer has been used in France for the same purposes as a surveyor's compass or transit.
Industry:Earth science
In general, any one of various instruments used for measuring angles, as in crystallography, anthropology and metrology. In surveying in particular, an instrument such as a theodolite for measuring horizontal angles.
Industry:Earth science
The land belonging to or yielding revenue to a parish church or ecclesiastical benefice.
Industry:Earth science
(1) An entity consisting of an electromagnetic field held together by the gravitational force arising from the energy, and hence mass, of the field. (2) A mathematical surface coinciding with the physical surface of the lithosphere.
Industry:Earth science
That part of geodesy which concerns the shapes of the upper surfaces and bottoms of the oceans and similar bodies of water, and with the locations of points on those surfaces. By convention, marine geodesy concerns itself only with the average positions of the upper surfaces. The instantaneous positions are the concern of navigation and physical oceanography. The oceanic bottoms are also the concern of oceanography and their determination is called hydrographic surveying or hydrography in that science. Other, broader definitions of marine geodesy have been proposed.
Industry:Earth science
A graticule whose lines represent fictitious meridians and fictitious parallels of latitude.
