Chemical mechanism for producing active nitrogen from molecular nitrogen in the gas phase. The pair of reactions O + N<sub>2</sub> → NO + N and N + O<sub>2</sub> → NO + O were first proposed by Russian scientist Y. B. Zeldovich in 1947. The reactions are thought to account for much of the active nitrogen formed in hot exhaust gases from combustion sources and following the rapid heating of the air during lightning discharges.

The weather risk is the uncertainity in cash flow and earnings due to weather variability. Risks typically covered for a firm in the energy industry are the number of heating or cooling degree- days, and for agribusinesses, the amount of growing season rainfall or the number of July days with temperatures above 32°C (90°F).

According to the summation principle, at any level, if the ratio of the transparent sky cover to the total sky cover (opaque plus transparent) is one-half or more, then the cloud layer at that level must be classified as “thin. ” It is denoted by the symbol “−” preceding the appropriate sky cover symbol.

Army Corps of Engineers, the number of Fahrenheit degree- days (above and below 32°F) between the lowest and highest points on the cumulative degree- days time curve for one thawing season. The thawing index determined from air temperatures at 4. 5 ft above the ground is commonly designated the air thawing index, while that determined from temperatures immediately below a surface is called the surface thawing index.
